US Airways Labor Coalition Letter to Members

Dear US Airways Union Members,

Congress is considering raising airline taxes that, if passed, will wreak havoc on union airline workers.

Log on to and use the links to tell Washington, D.C., "NO" to new airline taxes. A congressional panel is working on the tax scheme now and must have its work completed by Thanksgiving but your voice is urgently needed today.

Specifically, Congress may triple the passenger security tax from $2.50 to $7.50 by 2017. The security tax would double initially to $5.00 with annual increases of .50 cents each year.

The largest tax increase proposed is a $100 tax per flight departure. The tax is on every flight, every day, and 365 days a year. Multiply that by the number of flights we operate daily on mainline and express aircraft and this tax adds more than $100 million to US Airways costs each year. The taxes, in total, could add up to $350 million in costs to US Airways each year.

Our industry has struggled to adjust to economic realities over the last 10 years. Flights have been slashed, bases closed, and too many of our fellow workers have joined the unemployment line. If Congress passes these taxes, more jobs and flights to many communities will be in jeopardy.

A Washington, D.C.-based economics firm examined the consequences of the tax increase plan. Using data from the General Accounting Office (GAO), the FAA, and the Department of Labor, the study found that 329,000 airline and airline-related jobs will be destroyed by 2021 if the tax hikes are passed. Over 180,000 aviation jobs will be lost in 2012 alone!

The study sends a chilling message to airline union workers: Add taxes, lose jobs. The study is a wake up call for us to take action now.

For these specific reasons, airline unions, management, air traffic controllers, and other aviation groups signed a letter on Sept. 21, 2011 to congressional leadership strongly opposing new airline taxes. These organizations are well respected on Capitol Hill, but every voice will make a difference.

The AFL-CIO and independent unions have joined the cause to fight these taxes and to save union jobs. Please log on today to We also ask that you please pass on the website link to your family and friends.
